Katsudon at Miyabi Japanese Restaurant!

Hello, I’m Chietomonji, a gourmet writer.

This time, I traveled to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

The purpose of this trip was to do food reviews of a Japanese restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant, and an almond croissant.

Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, is located about 640 km south of Auckland. It takes roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes by plane, or about 7 to 8 hours by car.

In fact, Wellington is a place where I once lived for about five to six years, including my student days. This visit was my first in more than ten years.

After picking up a rental car, it took about 15 minutes to reach the Wellington city center. My first destination was Miyabi Japanese Restaurant.

Arrival in Wellington. The temperature was 12°C, and unfortunately, it was raining.

I came here with one thing in mind: I wanted to eat katsudon.

Miyabi Japanese Restaurant is not directly on Willis Street, but tucked slightly away from the main road.

When I arrived, there were no other customers inside, and the Japanese music playing in the background filled me with a sense of nostalgia.

Although I had already decided on katsudon, I still took a look at the menu—just in case.

I ordered the katsudon, and after waiting about 15 minutes, it was brought to the table.

In New Zealand, katsudon is often made with chicken katsu, but here it was tonkatsu (pork).

The batter was well soaked with a sweet and savory sauce, delivering a bold flavor without being overly soupy. That balance was key.
It was the first time in a long while that I had eaten a truly good katsudon in New Zealand.

One bowl of katsudon—finished.

Miyabi Japanese Restaurant, it was delicious.

Thank you for the wonderful meal.
