An Almond Croissant in Christchurch Worth Coming Back For
Hello, this is Chietomonji.
I absolutely love almond croissants, and in my search for the perfect one, I’ve eaten many over the years. But recently, for the first time in a while, I came across an almond croissant that I can confidently say is a must-repeat.
The place is a small café called “Grizzly”, located in Christchurch, the main city of New Zealand’s South Island—far from Auckland.
The building that houses Grizzly also contains several other eateries, giving it the feel of a small food court.
Although the café itself is quite small, it’s probably popular with locals—there were already a few people lining up at the register.
My target, of course, was the almond croissant. I did notice other tempting items like sandwiches, but today there was no hesitation: almond croissant only.
For coffee, I ordered a long black. They can warm the croissant in the oven, so I asked for that, took the number tag, and sat down inside.
After about a 10-minute wait, my order was brought to the table.
Visually, it was different from a typical almond croissant—you could clearly see that the pastry was made up of many delicate layers.
It smelled wonderful, with a texture that was slightly crispy yet pleasantly chewy. As I bit into it, the pastry was moist and rich, clearly carrying a buttery flavor.
One of the key elements of an almond croissant—the almond paste inside—was perfectly balanced, gently sweet, moist, and delicious. Paired with the coffee, the refined sweetness really stood out.
Yes—this was the kind of almond croissant I hadn’t encountered in a long time. Truly satisfying.
This one is definitely a repeat.
When I’m back in Christchurch, I’ll be coming here again.
It was delicious. Thank you for the great treat.
