Khmer Satay Noodle House in Christchurch(Gourmet Exploration Series – Laksa Bowl No. 3)
Hello, this is Chietomonji.
Today, I’d like to share a food review from “Khmer Satay Noodle House” in Christchurch, where I tried their chicken laksa.
I visited the restaurant at around 7:00 p.m. on a clear Tuesday evening. Including myself, there were about 20 customers inside. The restaurant had a warm, home-style atmosphere, with a layout that allowed a view into the kitchen. Three staff members were cooking, with one person at the register, so it seemed to be run by a team of four.
While looking over the menu, I debated what to order. The chicken laksa came highly recommended in reviews, so I decided to go with that. I was actually tempted by the Combination Pho, but this time I stuck to my original plan and chose the laksa.
About ten minutes after ordering, the laksa was brought to the table. At first glance, it was already a little surprising. There were hardly any bean sprouts; instead, it was topped with something like fried shallots, which added a nice aromatic touch. The soup had a noticeable acidity and reminded me somewhat of Tom Kha, a Thai coconut soup. Compared to typical laksa, the broth was a bit lighter and more refreshing. It likely used fish sauce or another seasoning with a stronger salty profile.
The toppings included fried tofu, chicken, fish balls, and a boiled egg. The noodles had a slightly curly texture, which was my first time experiencing this style in a laksa.
The restaurant was lively with local families and groups, giving the impression that it’s well loved by the community. I was satisfied with the flavors, and next time I’d like to try the Combination Pho or their fried rice as well.
It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.
